The ancient Dhumeshwar Mahadev temple located in Bhitarwar area has many historical stories preserved. Pindi is said to originate from the river. Historians believe that the Pindi of Lord Shiva in the temple has emerged from a river, the depth of which no one has been able to measure till date. It is said that this temple was built in a single night. Later the temple was renovated in 1936 during the tenure of Gwalior King Jiwaji Rao Scindia. About the Dhumeshwar Mahadev Temple, built at the confluence of Shiva and Parvati rivers, 27 kilometers from Dabra and about 12 kilometers from Bhitarwar, it is said that this temple was constructed in a single night. Orchha King Veer Singh had built this temple in a single night. People’s belief is fulfilled just by having darshan of the ancient and miraculous Pindi. It is the most ancient and historical temple of the district. Looking at the carvings of the temple, the imprint of the Mughal rule period can also be seen in the architecture of the temple.

Why is it known as Dhumeshwar?

The gurgling waterfall around the Dhumeshwar temple makes the temple more attractive. People come there to have picnics. According to historians, the water of Sindh River falls down in the form of a waterfall from a great height, due to which smoke rises as the water falls down. Therefore this temple is known as Dhumeshwar Mahadev Temple.
Water rises with the first rays of dawn

The front part of the temple appears to be in Mughal style. Also, the sun rises from the direction just behind the part of the temple where Lord Shiva’s Pindi is placed and the first rays of the sun also fall on the Pindi. Besides, water is also offered to Shivling every morning.
Scindia dynasty had done the renovation

Mahant Aniruddha Maharaj of the temple tells that this temple was first built by the Nagavanshiya rulers. This temple was famous for human sacrifice. It is said that the Mughal rulers had destroyed the temple during their reign. Later Orchha King Veer Singh (Raja Veer Singh Bundela Of Orchha) got the temple constructed in a single night. The temple was renovated in 1936 during the tenure of Gwalior King Jiwaji Rao Scindia. A fair is organized in the month of Shravan.

Gwalior- The ancient Dhumeshwar Mahadev Temple, built just 70 km away from Gwalior district headquarters of Madhya Pradesh, still remains a center of faith among thousands of people. Historians believe that Dhumeshwar temple was built during the time of Nagvanshis. Later, Raja Veer Singh Dev of Orchha got it better constructed between the years 1605-1627. After this, in 1936-1938, this temple was renovated by the ruler of Gwalior, Maharaja Jiwaji Rao Scindia. Dhumeshwar temple is seen in Rajputana style. Earlier, there was only the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, which is built with amazing art. The next part of which was constructed later.

It is said that the front part of the temple appears to be in Mughal style. While the inside is quite ancient, Hindu civilization is visible in it. There is a huge Shivalinga of Lord Shiva in the same part. Just behind Shivling, the idol of Mother Parvati is seated on the wall. The special thing here is that when the sun rises, the first rays of the sun fall on the Shivalinga and the shape of the Shivalinga rests on the idol of Mother Parvati.
The kings of Nagavansh had built the temple
The area in which the temple is established. It was once the capital of the Naga dynasty. Which is known as Padmavati. People of the area say that a huge Shivalinga is installed separately in one corner of the temple. About which there is belief. That it was established by the kings of Nagavansh. Later which was established in the sanctum sanctorum of Shivalinga temple. It was established by Maharaja Veer Singh of Orchha.
Siddha is seated on 9 posts

Near the temple and in the middle of the river, there is a place known as 9 Chowkis. There are many stories regarding this, some say that this place belongs to the Siddhas. In ancient times, sages and saints used to sit and worship here. Its shape is also such that the river flow collides with it and in ancient times, saints used to worship in the caves built inside it. So there is also a saying that out of 9 outposts, only one outpost is visible above while 8 outposts are underground.
Lakhs of devotees reach Dhumeshwar Dham on Mahashivratri.
Every year on the holy festival of Mahashivratri, lakhs of devotees reach Dhumeshwar Mahadev Temple. And after anointing with rituals, they worship Lord Bholenath. It is said that on the day of Mahashivratri, a large number of devotees coming from nearby and far away places keep coming and going throughout the day. Due to which the grand fair of Mahashivratri has created a distinct identity in itself.
